Soul Food Restaurants - 3 Most Frequently Asked Questions

Soul food restaurants have a reputation of good food and plenty of it for a reasonable price. Of course the in my opinion the top soul food restaurants still live in the south. But as the competition gets hotter more upstarts are making a name for themselves in many northern, eastern and western locations. These new upstarts bring a new twist and a fresh angle to traditional southern cuisine never seen before. This has caused many questions in people minds who watch changes slowly take place in the industry.  I often get questions on the new trend of soul food eating establishments spreading across the country, I'll share them here with you.

1. Is old school soul food restaurants fading away?

Yes and no. If you're talking about the eatery that refuses to change in the way of ingredients they use such as lard or other animal fats. Or subject their customers to bad service and less than desirable cleaning practices, yes. That establishment is working on borrowed time. But the business that continues to look for healthier ways to cook their dishes while preserving the down-home taste of it's recipes as much as possible is here to stay.

2. What's up with the healthy trend?

This has been the edge that carried the tasty southern cuisine back. Long saddled with the reputation of being unhealthy because of the large amount of animal fat, salt and butter, soul has turned healthier leaf on life. Restaurants continue to turn to healthier ingredients, cooking methods and  seasoning techniques to offer a healthier end product to the customer.

3. What's the best way to choose a good soul food restaurant?

You can go by many ways. For example, time in business,  convenient location,  price. But the best way that has stood the test of time is word-of-mouth. A good place to eat will always leave clues. If it's real good people will talk ... If it's real bad people will talk.

Where's the Beef? - It's in the Recipe For Wendy's Hamburgers - So What's the Secret?

The real question in everyone's mind isn't "where's the beef?"; it's what is the recipe for Wendy's hamburgers? Well, until recently, I could tell you the answer to "where's the beef," and I could tell you that if you make a square burger that you "don't believe in cutting corners," and I could probably tell you every theory on why Wendy's burgers are square. What I couldn't tell you was the recipe for the delicious burgers.

Wendy's burgers have long been a favorite in my family. I ate one for the first time, because my sons wanted to try the square burger. They were saying, "oh boy, this is cool looking;" and I was saying, "boy, does this taste good." Of course, I immediately wanted the ingredients. I had three young boys who were about ready to go threw a growth spirt, so I needed to make affordable meals that they liked at home, more now then ever. I knew I could manage to make a cool looking, square burger, but I wanted it to taste just as good, too.

Need I say, it became a tradition to go to Wendy's, but I never got my hands on that recipe. My sons are now engaged to be married, so I figure grandchildren are next. This little revelation gave me cause to think back to those days when that unique burger from a favorite fast food restaurant could make the day special. That's when I decided it was time to search for the recipe on the internet to see if it could be found. After all, I could still make them for my growing family. Amazingly enough, after all these years, I found the recipe for Wendy's hamburgers, and countless other recipes I never thought I could find, all in one recipe book. One book - hundreds of sought after recipes.

The best part of finding this recipe book is still to come, because as days pass, should some of these famous, wonderful, recipes be lost over time, my family will always have access to them and their flavorful memories.

How would you like to recreate the most famous popular recipes at home? This famous cookbook exposes all of the most famous and most delicious secret recipes on the planet including restaurants such as Wendy's. Don't waste your time like I did!

The reviewer gave this recipe 5 stars. This recipe averages a 4.5 star rating. Reviewed on Aug. 25, 2005 by Marian   view full review Absolutely wonderful recipe! I used about 2 1/2 lbs. of cut up chicken and used 4 packets of Goya Chicken Bouillon and I think that probably was the secret to seasoning this soup. I used baby carrots and put two whole (scrubbed with the peel on) potatoes in the bottom of the pot with chicken. I followed the instructions and let it cook, took the chicken off the bone and returned everything to the pot after I cut up the veggies. I then added some frozen vegetable soup cut veggies (celery, peas, onion, potatoes, okra, etc.) and ditalini pasta. My son has a cold and this soup really hit the spot with him, even in 110 degree weather! I really recommend this soup recipe! I put half in individual containers in our freezer and my son, who wants soup every day, will be set for at least a few days! Was this review helpful? [ YES ]

This recipe averages a 4.5 star rating. This recipe is very tasty though it is also very basic - which is perfect for the beginner chef. Once you begin to "doctor" your own recipes, you will see that the more flavors you add to chicken broth, the better. For example, why stop with carrots and celery? In addition to these things, I add a potato, tomato, fresh basil, fresh parsley, red peper, onion, etc... Make sure to be generous with the salt as stock can be quite bland unless seasoned appropriately. I even use a couple of bay leaves and a couple of peppercorns during the cooking process. Bring the liquid to a boil, then turn the heat down and simmer. I use a lid on my soup to keep evaporation to a minimim, though I "vent" the lid with a wooden spoon during cooking (kind of props up the lid) so that it isn't completely sealed shut... Add water 1/2 way through cooking if necessary. Boullion is OK, but not necessary if you have the appropriate blend of chicken, veggies and herbs. Serve with rice or your noodle of choice. Never cook noodles in the broth - always in a separate pot because the starch will ruin your soup. The more you times you make this recipe, the more you will enjoy it - as it is definitely a process of trial and error. ENJOY! Was this review helpful? [ YES ]

The Joy of Fast Food Restaurant Recipes

Love it or hate it, fast food is embedded in American dining culture. Fast food restaurants cater to our modern need for convenience, cheapness and a "no surprises" experience.

While it is fashionable to sneer at them, if pressed many of us would confess to really liking at least some of the menu items offered by the major chain fast-food restaurants. Most kids love those places, as you probably know if you have youngsters. Children wield a lot of influence with parents looking for a place to eat that will satisfy everyone in the family; hence the great effort on the part of fast food restaurants to market special meals and toys to the younger set.

The fact that half of the food ordered at fast food places now takes place via the drive-up window should tell you all you need to know about the success of this type of restaurant. We Americans practically live in our cars, so if we're eating a large part of our meals behind the wheel, you know this is one marriage (cars + food) that really will be "'til death do us part."

If you're one of those who resorts to this type of fare only grudgingly, or because the kids are bugging you for it, you might be surprised to learn that there are fast-food aficiandos among us who positively love fast food. Usually, they have one particular fast food chain that they adore, and one or two specific menu items that they crave several times a week.

If you happen to be one of these fast-food conoisseurs--or you know someone who is--the good news is that it's easy to obtain the recipe for that "gotta-have-it" menu item. You can then make the favored dish at home, saving you at least a few trips to the drive-through. (Of course, you'll miss out on having the burger or burrito or whatever come nicely enveloped in the restaurant's logo-printed wrapping paper, but you can't have everything.)

Recipes for many of the world's favorite fast-food items can be found by doing a web search for them. Or, you can purchase one of the books of "secret" restaurant recipes available in most of the big bookstores. Conveniently downloadable ebooks, filled with such recipes, are also readily to be found.

One tip: As the name implies, fast food tends to be eaten on the run. But if you decide to make your favorite fast-food meal at home, try slowing down and enjoying it at a more leisurely pace. "Slow fast food" -- now there's a concept.

Soul Food Dinner Ideas For the Busy Woman

Soul food dinner ideas comes in handy especially if your boss ask you to work overtime, you have to pick you daughter up from soccer practice and the freeway traffic is packed. By the time you get home you want a fast, convenient and healthy way to give your family a balanced meal. Here's some simple ideas to give your family a tasty home cooked meal if you're busy.

1. Look For Soul Food Recipes Online.

You can get many soul food recipe ideas online with the click of a mouse. As the demand for more convenient ways to prepare meals grows, you'll find more websites working to meet this demand. Trust me, the resourceful homemakers of today are using this tool like you wouldn't believe. Many southern dishes can be time consuming if you don't know the short-cuts to take.

2. Take Advantage of Video Recipes.

Video recipes are the new kid on the block. When it comes to seeing how the many soul food dishes come together, there's nothing like watching an expert do it. Video recipes continue to grow because of their effectiveness. It's much easier to watch a recipe being prepared than to read it. It's a simple case of show and tell. For example, you can get a clearer picture of how to clean and cook collard greens or make a southern peach cobbler by watching an expert prepare. Comparing a video recipe to merely reading the recipe and it's like night and day, especially if the recipe is complicated. Look for the video recipe site to grow by leaps and bounds in the coming year.

3. Cook on The Weekend or Off Days and Freeze.

This is a favorite solution to the busy housewife who has little or no time to spend in the kitchen on workdays. Taking part of your off day to cook for the week and freeze will give you the convenience of having a nutritious home cooked meal during the week.

4. Let Your Fingers Do The Soul Food Cooking.

This is another version of step 3 above. The only difference is instead of you spending an off day cooking nutritious meals and freezing them, you hire others to do it. Many restaurants are offering this service as well as supermarkets and other specialty caterers. Check your local phone directory or search engine for details.

5. Let Your Family Help.

One of the most under-utilized resources in helping you get soul food dinner ideas is your family. After you set down the basic rules (no pizza, chicken fingers or candy) your family can be a rich source of dinner ideas. You can even get them more involved by letting them help you in the kitchen. Make it fun and adventurous. Make your kitchen a place you bond with your children, they can not only help you create fond memories, they can be a source of help as well.

By taking the time to use these powerful soul food dinner ideas your meals will be more convenient, nutritious and satisfying as well.

Super Foods: Tri-Pepper Salad | Submitted By: Janet

1 head romaine lettuce, torn into bite-size pieces1/2 orange bell pepper, julienned1/2 red bell pepper, julienned1/2 yellow bell pepper, julienned1/4 ounce Parmesan cheese, thinly sliced1/4 cup raspberry vinaigrette salad dressingIn a large bowl, toss together the lettuce, orange pepper, red pepper, yellow pepper and cheese. Pour dressing over salad and toss to coat. Amount Per Serving  Calories: 35 | Total Fat: 0.5g | Cholesterol: < 1mg

The reviewer gave this recipe 3 stars. This recipe averages a 3.8 star rating. Because this called for raspberry vinaigrette, not balsamic vinaigrette, that's what I used. In fact, rather than using a bottled vinaigrette, I made "Raspberry Vinaigrette," using fresh raspberries, submitted by Dorothy Smith. The salad on it's face is merely lettuce and peppers, not really a recipe. Mediocre bordering boring, but a good way to use up mixed peppers. Was this review helpful? [ YES ]
